I believe you're absolutely on point as to how to present magic - without ego or showing off. Well, at least as far as we can tame the ego. I've been a professional magician for 23 years and I think a little ego is a necessary thing.

The key is to always keep in mind that our job is to entertain ... to take people away from their day to day problems for a brief period and give them a respite. To take their minds off their financial problems, their work stresses, their child's grades, and so on. It's a meditation of sorts.

As an aside - it's interesting that you looked at Jamy as having no ego. It's to his credit that, along with being a superb magician, he's able to present a performing face that's jolly and courteous.

The irony is that he's one of the most egotistical magicians in America. His bias against some fellow magi at Monday Night Magic in New York (not me) is reprehensible.

I enjoy watching him and reading his articles and interviews but I can't abide being with him.

At the age of Internet it is easier to check the DVD's or videos you want to buy. You may find not only reviews, but also previews commented by those who have already bought and seen the product.

When it comes to "make it you": I would suggest to consider magic books and DVDs as sources of methods and ideas rather than sources of tricks or whole routines. If two magicians do exactly the same, one can compare which of them does better - and the DVD issuer may win the contest more often...

You have got to love a quick tear down, rush out the door, arrive at the next gig minus a bag that is sitting in the wings of the last stage! (Containing all of your body loads).Agreed 100% good advice... a 2 - 3 hour gap between gigs is the way to go.

And NEVER turn down one show for a bigger better paying gig. Say you are sorry that you could not do the bigger show, but this time of year is a big demand for your time. They will be sure to book you well in advance the next time.

I like the concept of a threading a recurring theme. I used to start my multiple sponge ball production by turning a silk into a ball and then end with a jumbo sponge, now I end by transforming the last ball back into a silk. For pocket management purposes I had to stop using the jumbo ball - but I find this new ending is very effective.

Thanks for your comments. Growing up with you and Tony was great for me and I'll never forget what he has done. Here in Japan I try ti share Tony with the magicians I meet here. And I though you as well for being such a positive part of my life. Tony will never be forgotten.

Aaron: you've given a lovely and touching tribute to my dad. Thank you so much for your open and honest sharing. It was a great read for me; my mum was very happy to read it. It's hard to reconcile that Tony's gone now - even a year and a half later. However, it's stories like yours that make me smile and remember how great a person he was. It will be thanks to people like you - who remember Tony so fondly - who keep his memory alive and vital...just like the man he was. Thank you for this fabulous tribute.

Aaron, I am so touched by this story. Tony had always considered you the son he never had. He would've been so proud of you (I am too). Yes, it's been over a year now and we still missed him everyday. Julie, Sandra and I talked everyday, supporting each other. Good luck in your future plans. It was very long ago but I remember it very it well. It was my first time to Salt Spring and after that I returned many times to do shows there. All thanks to Tony :) Thanks for your comment! Tony was a great man. Tony created many great magicians over the years.

Hi Aaron - I think I remember you from that show on Salt Spring Island! I sure remember a WONDERFUL very young magician who was named Aaron and he did magic at the elementary school one day. He wowed the kids and the adults too... and what great stage presence! It was so much fun to read your story now, and to hear of the lovely relationship you had with this man Tony. I miss him now too... and I never even met him... all I know of him is from this blog post. Now I will go to the Tony site and learn more. Thanks Aaron, I hope to see you perform again some time. (ps - I was one of the mothers in that crowd on Salt Spring...)
